Human Rights Celebration

On Tuesday December 1oth our English classes took part in the Human Rights Celebration. Comunidad Infantil participated in a gross motor activity which consisted in being "trapped". Along with teacher Fanny, we formed a bridge with our arms and sang "London Bridge is falling down". The students would run under the bridge and as the song ended, one was caught. We also used hula hoops to represent something similar to the first activity. Teacher Fanny and I were the ones who caught the students, but then we turned it around and allowed the little ones to catch not only their classmates, but their teachers!In this process they learned to say the word "free" and once they said it, they were set free again.

     

In Kinder C, the students were to bring in images of things they need and things they want. The object was to have them distinguish the difference between these. In the classroom, we talked a little about Human Rights and the things we have a right to, for example, a right to an education, to a home, to health and medical assistance, etcetera. After having this small chat, the whole group went out by the Aleph and categorized their images accordingly: Things I need/Things I want.

                                                                 

The entire process was fulfilling and fun. There is an important lesson to take into consideration: although the students may be younger, it is imperative that they understand that everyone has a right to certain things and that there is a need to speak up when those rights are being interfered.

El dia martes 1o the diciembre, nuestras clases de Inglés tomaron parte un la celebración de Derechos Humanos. Comunidad infantil participo en una actividad de habilidades motoras gruesas, consistiendo en ser “atrapados”. Junto con la maestra Fanny, formamos un puente con nuestros brazos y cantamos “London Bridge is falling down”. Los alumnos corrían por debajo del puente y al término de la canción uno era atrapado. También se usaron aros, representando algo similar a la primera actividad. La maestra Fanny y yo comenzamos a atrapar a los niños pero después, los pequeños perseguían no solo a sus compañeros si no a sus maestras! Durante este proceso, aprendieron a decir la palabra “free” ó libre, una vez dicha, se les dejaba ser libres.

En Kinder C, los alumnos entregaron imagines de objetos que se necesitan y cosas que se quieren. El objetivo consistía en diferenciar entre ambas. En el salón, se habló un poco sobre los Derechos Humanos y las cosas sobre las cuales tenemos derecho…educación, hogar, salud y atención médica, entre otras. Posteriormente, el grupo salió en los afueras del Aleph y se categorizaron las imágenes de acorde a: Cosas que necesito/Cosas que quiero.

Fue un proceso gratificante y divertido. Hay que tomar en consideración que aquí hay una lección importante: aunque los alumnos son pequeños, es imperativo que comprendan que todos tenemos derechos y que es necesario el hablar y expresarse cuando esos derechos son obstaculizados.
